Janelle, because you are going to Cozumel, MX, as of Jan 1, 08, you have to have a passport. Thought I'd let you know. Also need it to get into Canada now, I think.

Or maybe it's not to get into those countries but to re-enter the USA.

Sounds like a great trip. Even if I won the lottery I couldn't make it, the middle of May is baseball season

I am not sure if that passport to Mexico applies to sea passengers (Until Middle of summer), but I know it does to air. MAN I need to get moving on getting Passports for everyone. Here is the news I found on it.

The clock is ticking for you to get a passport if you plan on traveling outside of the U.S., including crossing the border into Mexico.

In January, the state department started requiring all air passengers flying into the U.S. to have a passport as part of a post 9-11 crackdown on illegal entry into the U.S.

But by next summer, all international travelers, by air, sea and land, will be required to have a passport.

The streets of Nogales, Sonora are bustling with visitors like Tyler Cameron. He and his family are visiting from Utah and they've come to Nogales to do some Christmas shopping. But the one thing he forgot to pack: his passport.

"Definitely going to have to remember the passport next time," he says.

Starting next year, it's a must have to get back across the border.

Of the dozen or so people we asked, most knew about the new requirements. But some have put off getting one.

"If I don't get it before the end of January, then I won't be coming back for a few weeks," says visitor Pat Frontzak.

At one point this year, the wait for a passport was up to 3 months. But the state department says now the wait is about four to six weeks, which means if you apply now, you still have a chance at making the January 31st deadline.

"We've hired hundreds of new passport specialists and managers and supervisors so we can meet that increased demand," says Deputy Assistant for Passport Services Ann Barrett.

The government says it's all part of tighter post 9-11 security, but opinions differ on whether it will really make a difference.

"There are too many rules and regulations. They are just making more and more rules," Cameron says.

"We should have to have proof of our citizenship too. Not just someone else, but we all should," Frontzak says.

But like it or not, it's a new law: and something travelers like Tyler won't be able to leave home without.
