Wow! How true and how very, very sad . What a stark difference 40 years has made. Let's not forget to mention that Johnny is also coming out of school with a 2nd grade reading level. This is called progress?

Yes, I remember not be able to chew gum in school when I was a kid. That is the least of teacher's worries now. My son chews gum at school.

Heck, nowadays you can talk, play games, text message, listen to movies and music on cell phones at school. Ridiculous - no wonder kids don't learn much. I think cell phones should be banned from the classroom. How on earth did we ever get through school without them?

I still don't own a cell phone and don't want one.

You know this could be funny if it weren't so true! I received 2 swats on my bottom end my 2nd day of 1st grade (we didn't have K then). This was in the classroom. I wasn't even sent to the principal. It was the teacher's paddle. You know what awful thing happened as a result of this of course. I went & sat down where I was supposed to be & never got in trouble in school again. I'll bet the teacher didn't even document the incident! Today you don't dare paddle a kid in the classroom, in front of other students or without plenty of witnesses. And if you do, you have to write up a 3 page report to "document" every thing the child did & all the alternative methods you tried to change the child's behavior. The 60's weren't so bad.
