    started back

at the gym this morning. Haven't been since before Christmas. Need to get back in shape. I'm not sure if it's the inactivity or the change in meds, but my heart rate is higher than normal (for me). See if this helps before I call the doc.

Hey Carol, I am getting reacquainted w/my treadmill too. I've been working on my diet and am near my 1st goal. How much higher is your heart rate? Lowering or discontinuing a dose of your beta blockers can increase your heart rate.

It's anywhere from 10-20 pts higher. He changed me from a beta blocker to a calicum channel blocker because of my Raynaud's. The calcium channel blocker is supposed to be better for that. It just may be that I am out of shape. Don't know how fast you can deteriorate at my age. It's not in a danger zone so I'm willing to give it another week before I call. If it doesn't come down I will be calling the doc.

Then that is normal that your pulse is higher. A beta blocker will slow your heart rate at least 10 - 20 bpm. A calcium channel blocker won't slow your HR. You are not out of shape, but do start back a little slower as you may have deconditioned a little.
I got on my treadmill yesterday, only had 20min b/c I had to take DS to the dentist.
I'll get in at least 30 to 40 today.

Then we need to do some tweaking cuz I need my heart rate to stay in zone. It's headed toward my max & that isn't good when you're exercising. At my age I should be 112-136 bpm (65%-85%) when I exercising & it's running 146-150 (max is 156).

Then take your exercise down a notch for a few weeks and see if comes down a bit as you build back up.
If your HR still goes too high and you don't feel as though you are working that hard, talk to Doc about it.

it's good that you know what levels you're supposed to be at and ate monitoring it. I'm clueless with all that stuff. I do need to start exercising, I feel blah lately. I know I need to get in shape.

My trainer was really into monitoring. And after the first disastrous PF Chang's, I got serious about it, too. My cardiologist likes that I know exactly what my rates are. If you just say "I think my hr is too fast" that doesn't really help him much.

I've also go to get back to the exercise routine. It looks like our weather will hold in the mild range so I'll be walking at our park track.

Carol, take care and be sure to ask those questions.
