I finally did something with the Hawaiian quilt page, although I couldn't cover it except for journaling.

Left side - the plaque pictured:
Not far from here, on April 5, 1942 nine American naval aviators perished in the service of their country.

    Ensign William H. Howe
    Ensign George L. Doll
    Orren A. Roberts AMM1c NAP
    Joseph H. Hayman AMM3c
    Jack Parish ARM2c
    Billy B. Herrin AMM2c
    Delbert G. Berchot AM3c
    Charles L. Andrews RM3c
    Willliam F. Allen SEA1c

They crashed their "Catalinia" PBY-5A Serial 2487 seaplane, returning from 12.5 hours of patrolling the waters around Hawaii for enemy forces. They crashed trying to land in foul weather and darkness, mistaking the Makapu'u light for Barbers Point light and hit the hillside during a low altitude circling maneuver.

    Right side - Journaling reads:

    Makapu'u Lighthouse

One of Hawaii's most familiar landmarks commanding a spectacular view of the Windward side of O'ahu is Makapu’u Lighthouse, built in 1909 and automated in 1974. The popular uphill, aerobic hike takes about 45 minutes, walking along a 2-mile paved road that leads to a lookout above the lighthouse. The reward is a spectacular view of the entire coastline, the islands of Molokai and Lanai in the distance, and sometimes Maui. Two smaller islands can be clearly seen from this lookout - Manana Island, the largest, and Kaohikaipu Island. The Molokai Channel runs past Makapu'u Lighthouse and is an excellent spot to watch Humpback whales as they travel the channel between December and April.

OH WOW! Bonnie, this is such a great LO. I love the way you left the quilt bare for everyone to enjoy. The colors are so bright and happy.
