If you double/triple mat a photo do you usually have the mats the same width or different, i.e. both 1/4" or 1/8" & 1/4" (1/4 -1/2, etc.)? Is there a rule of thumb to go by or is it just preference?

As far as I'm concerned it's my preference. I try out different sizes and pick the one I like best.

There are no "rules" as far as I am concerned. You might triple mat at 1/8th plus and then mat on a larger mat. Then add embellies on the edges of the larger one, just an example.

There is no rule. I love to mat my photos. When I do multiple mats, I use differing widths. And I like to use matting colors that pull out a color that is in the photos.

I'm a "no rule" matter, too! And to make things even more interesting, I don't measure, I eyeball it.

Rules? there could be rules? I think not! Just go with the flow and what looks right for you. (I color outside the lines, once in a while, too) LOL

Well IF there are rules, just remember the old saying
