When I make a bow for a card or layout I do the flat, background piece and then make the bow separately and glue it on and it comes out really straight and looks like all one piece.
If your bows don't look quite right ..... here's a tutorial on tying the Perfect knot

She must have been a Girl Scout and learned how to tie a square knot then. She does a good job of explaining it. I remember from my scouting days "right over left, then left over right". It also helps you tie a neat bow.
