Just thought I would post pictures of my mother's quilt as it progresses. The main blocks and set-in blocks have all been sewn together now. I need to complete the border before I actually get it quilted. It is on a queen sized bed here:

That is gorgeous! It looks like every block is different. I love the color combination.

05-26-2014, 05:12 AM
Thank you Luanne :) Yes, every main block is different. There are 12 of them.

05-26-2014, 07:50 AM

05-26-2014, 06:58 PM
Aww, you ladies are too kind! Thank you all.

Man I love it! Love the color... I have been realizing my limitations... I've always wanted a quilt. and have been looking for one for my room... usually there is too much other colors in with a purple. Well I ordered me one this week...

Next best thing to making one! lol

Very pretty, Clarinda. Good find!

06-07-2014, 04:22 AM
I got the borders on my mother's quilt today. I turned the navy blue into a 'peeper', which is a fold of material that stands out from the quilt instead of just being a flat border. I chose a backing fabric (it is a flowered purple) and left it with my friend to be quilted :) Maybe my mother can take it home with her after her visit! Yay! LoL!

06-07-2014, 07:45 AM
That is gorgeous, Susan. Your mother will treasure it. It will be perfect if she can take it home with her. Can your friend do it that quickly?

06-08-2014, 05:57 AM
Thank you, Luanne :) My friend has been expecting me to ask her to do this so I think it will be ready on time. My mother gets here Thursday this week and is staying a couple of weeks. I will need to get the binding hand-stitched in time.I can sew one side of it on with the machine then the other side needs to be whipped down by hand.

Loving that border and I see the color better in this picture. Like it even more! So excited to hear how your mother will react. She'll absolutely love it.

06-08-2014, 01:19 PM
You have really moved along on this and it is just beautiful. I bet that you will have it ready too.

06-23-2014, 08:08 AM
i got it ready! I gave it to my Mom too :) She was present when it got quilted by my friend, and then as I stitched the binding on for her. It took a day and two nights to stitch the binding as it is a Queen sized quilt. She has managed to fold it so it packs into her suitcase. I want her to take it out tomorrow to use it as a background to do some four generations pics with my DD and DGD as they are visiting us too. Just had to show you the final, completed quilt spread out on my bed. Lol! I stood on a ladder to get this shot:

06-23-2014, 03:10 PM
That is beautiful. I'm glad you got up on the ladder to take the picture; I think it needed it for us to really see the beauty of it. I agree it'll make the perfect background for your 4 generation picture.

06-24-2014, 08:38 AM
Thank you, Luanne. :) As it turned out, we used another smaller quilt for the photos. Mom had already packed this one by the time we got to take pictures! LoL!

06-26-2014, 11:15 AM
That is just beautiful Susan...lol about standing on a ladder to get the picture...

06-27-2014, 03:50 AM
Yes, it was a bit extreme for me, Cyndi! LoL! Extreme crafting!!

06-28-2014, 12:15 AM
Today I managed to take a picture of the quilt my good friend gave me for my birthday last week. It looks so pretty on my bed, and it is just a lovely weight too. I need to make some matching pillow cases as my friend gave me the material I need to do that as well. But you can see how lovely it is from this picture. The design is an American Star pattern:

07-05-2014, 05:31 PM
I finished my raggy quilt yesterday and DH agreed to be a quilt model. Lol! It is a flannel quilt, and the squares are sewn from corner to corner (in an 'X' shape) before beign joined. The back is smooth and the seams are hidden. The front is where the decorative bit happens. The seams are left raw and then I snipped them and washed and dried the quilt in a dryer with a tennis ball thrown in. This makes the seams fray and puff so it looks like special binding. You don't iron this quilt as it is meant to be fluffy.

07-05-2014, 08:06 PM
Both those quilts are very lovely. Hubby is doing a good job modeling the quilt.

07-06-2014, 07:45 AM
Checking in again! I too can see your moms quilt colors better! I think getting the 4 generations photo with it was a great idea! Did you get it done? I'm a pastel girl my self so adore the quilt your friends made you! Shams willbe wonderful! The lap quilt is cute too! Is it made out of cotton? The one my dd made was with flannel the edges didn't need snipped or anything just washed!

Love love love the raggy quilt! I want one for ME now, lol! Looks so cozy and the colors are great.

07-06-2014, 02:07 PM
Just saw the one that your friends did and gave you, so pretty. The one that you did for your granddaughter is just too
cute, love the colors and the cupcakes...lol Tell DH that he is a good model...lol

07-07-2014, 12:19 AM
I love all your quilts. The quilt your friend made you is perfect with your bedroom colors. The raggy quilt is adorable and just says little girl all over it. Great work, as usual.

07-07-2014, 05:05 AM
Thank you all for the feedback :) It is always wonderful to be told your work is lovely, isn't it. You are the best!

Clarinda, the raggy quilt is made of flannel and I wonder if mine would have frayed OK without the snipping? Yes, we got the four generation pic done and I loved it, but we used a lap quilt for the background instead of the one i made my mother as she had already packed it. Lol! I agree, shams will be great for my bed and my girlfriend has given me fabric to make one, or to make some 'show' pillowcases, whatever I decide. Will discuss that project with my quilting friends (including said girlfriend) this week.

Maria, it took me about a day and a half to make the raggy quilt. Once you cut it out, it isn't hard to put together, and I really think you NEED one for winter! Put some wadding inside each square so it will suit your cold weather better. Cut it slightly smaller than the material so you can make the seams deep enough (sew 1/2" seams)

Marsha, thank you. I agree the quilt my friend gave me is perfect for our colours, and I really wanted the raggy to say it was for a little girl.

Cyndi and Luanne, DH says he only charges a little for my friends, if either of you want a model. Lol! He grinned when I gave him your feedback - he he he!

I finished a quilt for one of my granddaughters. She will be 4 in July and i plan to give it to her then. It's called the Purple Fairy quilt as it is covered in purple fairies. It is a single bed sized one but I photographed it on a queen sized bed:

Here is the front

And here is the back

Wow, this is gorgeous! I love how the underside has a small dedication to the recipient?
She will love it.

05-11-2015, 07:08 AM
You do such beautiful work. The fabric is so lovely.

05-11-2015, 10:55 AM
Love the fabric and you do great work. :) And it is great that your not having to finish it up at the last minute...

05-12-2015, 12:20 AM
Susan, it is so beautiful, and your granddaughter is a lucky girl to have a grandma like you. You are such a hard worker, and so talented at putting together colors and patterns. Kudos for a wonderful job.

05-12-2015, 06:27 AM
You are all so kind! It is a lot of fun (and work) to make these so it is lovely to have your feedback.

Maria, yes, I always put a little message on my quilts. Here's a close up of this one's:

Hmm. Just as well I posted the picture! I forgot to stitch a little blanket stitch around the message box. OopS! Guess I am not quite done yet :) Oh well. There is time to get that done now so I will do it tonight.

05-12-2015, 07:31 AM
That's funny, Susan. Glad you were reminded to finish the stitching. That is sweet to include that. Think of the many years people will be looking at that...

05-12-2015, 08:25 AM
Yes, I laughed at myself too LuAnne :) You are right, the little messages will be read by people for the life of the quilt. The stitching is all done now.http://www.startascrapbook.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=13103&stc=1

05-13-2015, 07:11 AM
Lovely! Love the pattern ... I might could do big blocks! Lol. How was the dr purple around them done? Love the dedicatiosailso!

05-13-2015, 09:21 AM
Thank you, Clarinda! I was taught how to make the blocks. They are made by sewing squares and strips together and then you sew the rows together, and set them on point and fill in the triangles on the sides. I recommend finding someone to teach you quilting if you want to make something like this as there are many things that need to be done to make the blocks accurately. If your measurements and sewing is out, the pattern will be off and it will be hard to make it look like it should.

05-16-2015, 06:01 AM
Here is the Churn Dash block I am making my granddaughter's quilt with. I need to make 28 of them for the first row around a panel of fairies. Remember this is the Pink fairy quilt now :)

Thank you everyone :)

05-17-2015, 07:24 PM
The purple fairy quilt is beautiful, the pink fairy one will be just as pretty. Can't wait to see the finished quilt. Such wonderful work!

Thank you Marsha! I'll be sure to post the finished quilts :)

The kids will adore these! So fun and bright. Love them. Did not seem to take you too long Susan...about 2 months working on and off?

06-23-2015, 01:14 AM
Clarinda, did I tell you that I bought the exact same quilt for my guest room double bed? The more I looked at it, the more I was sure they were the same quilts. I went looking for your posted pic and didn't find it until now. You know the saying "Great minds think alike."

06-23-2015, 01:16 AM
As always, beautiful work. Your gkids will cherish your quilts all the way into adulthood. They are so whimsical.

06-23-2015, 08:14 AM
I took my time n looked at all of them again! You really got a lot done this year! Love the block n color around the pink fairy quilt! The cars n fairies one with the big block in middle is ingenious ! Lol. That would help me a lot! Great job!

Marsha I didn't know but love my quilt! It washes up great too! I'm proud to be considered a great mind like you! Lol

06-24-2015, 02:45 AM
Thank you again, Clarinda and Marsha!

07-26-2016, 12:56 AM
I thought I would update my quilting thread as I have finished a few more quilts since I last posted. All are for my grandchildren. The Avenger quilts were for three little boys in the same family:

Wow, Susan, the Avenger's one is so fun and I love the vibrant colors! The churn dash one is so detailed, it must require lots of patience and attention!
I think my favorite is the raggy quilt... so soft and sweet. Thanks for sharing your gorgeous work.

07-26-2016, 09:05 PM
Love your quilts, Susan. The Avengers are so bright and stunning! The Churn Dash is very pretty and whimsical. I love the rag quilt too. Isn't this the one that wore out your fingers?

07-27-2016, 03:20 AM
Thank you, Maria and LuAnn :) Yes, the raggy quilt is the one that made my thumb numb! It is still recovering but I have a lot of the feeling back now :)
